Saint Georges.- The Pan Caribbean Association Against HIV/AIDS (PANCAP) will have 34 million dollars to combat this disease in the region, considered in second place in the world with the largest numbers of infected persons.
These resources were approved by the World Fund Against this epidemic, tuberculosis and malaria during a recent meeting of the board held in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.
PANCAP will use these funds to strengthen prevention, treatment and attention programs against the disease in countries of the area that currently registers 230,000 patients who test positive for HIV.
The aid will also allow mobilizing all sectors of society to achieve effective actions against the epidemic. PANCAP figures indicate that the Caribbean reported 3,000 less cases in 2009 that the previous year with 20,000 infected with the virus.
The region also presents similar figures of the index of deaths as compared to 2008 when there were 14,000 deaths.
PANCAP based in Georgetown, the Guyanese capital, is a regional institution set up in 2001 to coordinate responses of Caribbean nations to the AIDS epidemic. |
