According to the website of the event, Armenteros beat Italian Domenico Di Guida in the final bout after consecutive victories against Portuguese Jorge Fonseca, Egyptian Mohamed Abdelrahman, Japanese Takumi Asanuma, and
South Korean Younghun Kim.

With this result, the Caribbean nation placed fourth in the contest, won by Japan, whose representatives walked away with 12 crowns out of 16 up for grabs. The Japanese (12-0-1) were followed by Russia (2-4-3), Austria (1-0-1) and Cuba (1-0-0).

Cuba was represented in the competition by only two judokas: Armenteros and Mayelin Zayas, who lost in her fist bout in women's 70 kilograms. They attended the event invited by the International Judo Federation.
