Havana.-  Cuban children and youth paid tribute on Thursday to National Hero Jose Marti (1853-1895) for his birthday with parades, morning assemblies and poems.

Several honoring acts have taken place throughout the country on the occasion of the 157th birth anniversary of the prolific writer and independentist leader.

"Los zapaticos de rosa," "Ismaelillo" and other poems were heard at schools, where several students sang children's songs, and laid wreaths in busts erected to the Cuban hero.

University students re-enacted on Wednesday night the traditional march of the torches, from the Havana University staircase to the monument known as Fragua Martiana, a place where Marti was forced to do hard labor as an adolescent.

The first march of this kind was held on January 27, 1953, the year of Cuban hero's 100th birth anniversary.

Cuban figures and of other countries highlighted the political and ethical legacy of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and Patria newspaper leader. Marti founded them to lead the 1895 war.
