|Cuba’s Heberprot-P Benefits over 60,000 Patients in the World|

HAVANA, Cuba.-Heberprot-P, the only product in the world capable of curing diabetic foot ulcers, has benefited over 60,000 people in the world since its registration in Cuba in 2006, announced an expert.
Julio Baldomero Hernandez, deputy director for Clinical Trials of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), explained that the medicament has favored patients on the island and also from Venezuela, Uruguay, Argentina, Mexico, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Libya, Algeria, Angola and Vietnam. By way of illustrative studies, it has also been used in patients of Spain and France and it will soon be used in Russia and China, he added.
The medicine has saved the lower limbs of thousands of people, with 90% effectiveness. It has already been presented for registration in 25 countries and it's patented in 14 -of the European Union, Asia, Latin America and the United States-, stated Hernandez, one of the participants in the 18th Pan-American Congress on Endocrinology (COPAEN 2012).
Based on the recombinant human growth factor, it makes it possible to heal lesions and reduce amputations in most cases. Doctor of Sciences Manuel Raices, scientific secretary of the Havana 2012 International Biotechnology Congress, to be held in December, told ACN.
Developed by specialists and scientists of the CIGB, together with the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Institute, Heberprot-P is one of the basic medicines used by diabetic patients in primary and secondary health care.
According to the World Health Organization, some 300 million people in the world suffer from diabetes.
The meeting, under way at Havana's Convention Center and attended by some 1,000 delegates, will close its doors on Friday.
