LAS TUNAS, Cuba.-The contributions made by the Italian people to the sociocultural development of Las Tunas was acknowledged on Tuesday evening in this city during the inauguration of a film festival to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the twining of Las Tunas with the region of Lombardy.
Since 1997, the Italy-Cuba Friendship Association has carried out over 150 cooperation programs by way of the Giovanni Ardizzone Voluntary Work Brigade, pointed out Naik Caballero, delegate of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples to Las Tunas. The support of this group has made it possible to restore the El Cucalambe Vocational Art School, to publish books for children, to develop community projects and to carry out sport activities, like the Fabio di Celmo Soccer Cup. The members of the Association, added Caballero, also contribute to the spreading of Cuban culture in the world as well as its struggles, among them the condemnation to the economic blockade imposed on the island by the United States for over five decades now. For Giovanna Tamburello, head of the 29th Giovanni Ardizzone Brigade, these actions constitute an unforgettable experience, because any gesture of friendship towards the Caribbean island increases several times over in millions of similar actions in the world, due to the vocation of solidarity of Cubans. Rocco y sus hermanos (1960), by Luchino Visconti; Cinema paradiso (1988), by Giuseppe Tornatore; and Vincere (2009), by Marco Bellocchio are among the movies to be screened until May 12. |
