HAVANA, Cuba.-Nearly 134,000 South Americans traveled to Cuba until December 25, according to statistics of the island's Tourist Information and Promotion Office for the Southern Cone announced on Thursday in Buenos Aires. Most visitors came from Argentina (74,473 passengers, a figure that increased by 30.1 percent as compared to 2010, the Prensa Latina news agency reported. In the case of Chile, the figure is 23,377 travelers this year, for an increase of 34.8 percent. Uruguayan visitors totaled 6,800; Brazilians, 13,751; Peruvians, 14,700; and Paraguay, close to 542. The head of the Tourist Information and Promotion Office for the Southern Cone, Luis Aguilera, announced that from January to April, 2012, the number of direct flights per week between Buenos Aires and Havana, Varadero, Cayo Largo, Cayo Coco, Santa Clara and Holguin will increase to eight. Aguilera highlighted that airlines like COPA, TACA-Avianca, Andes and LAN Peru will maintain, strengthen or start other complementary operations that will notably expand air transportation capacities towards the Caribbean island. |
